Past Becomes Present

The Auranis had started ten years ago.

Or… Eleven? Or twelve?

Nobody kept track anymore.

Willow awoke with a stretch. She sighed, wearily opening her eyes and looking around at the dim room around them. A bunch of bunk beds had been shoved into one of the old storage rooms, and it had worked as a bedroom for everybody. It wasn't very private, but… They made do. It wasn't really a bedroom in the traditional sense, but it was simply just a place of sleep and nothing more. With people running errands, and doing so much work around the aquarium… There were some tiring days.

But everyone was simply thankful to be alive.

They were far luckier than most. To be behind the secure walls of the aquarium, well-fed, and sound of mind in the knowledge that nothing could get them in there. It was a luxury that had lured in everyone before Nych and Willow, and one that had ensnared them too. They had helped with most of the technological aspects around the aquarium, but also frequently helped Henry with research or any medical emergencies around the compound.

Luckily, those were minimal.

She rolled over, wrapping her arms around Nych and softly pressing her lips to his. "Hey."

Nych, of course, hadn't been truly asleep. He'd been in his semi-shutdown phase to save the energy for any heavy lifting that day. He knew they would most likely have to cut power to the east wing for a while, at least until they could fix whatever was causing it to sap twice as much energy as it should have been.

He sighed. He'd be the one doing most of the work, fixing the wiring and making sure Bernard's damned fish didn't die.

It was beautiful, though, whenever a fish gave birth. It gave everyone hope, and everyone always crowded around whatever particular tank the fish was in and watched.

"Good morning." He muttered, rolling over and pressing his lips to her neck.

He didn't want to get up.

Willow smiled softly, lovingly pressing a kiss to the top of his head. "We should get up soon." She said, reaching down to pull the blankets up over their shoulders. She would probably be on chum duty that day (partially because she was one of the only people able to handle the smell of the damned stuff), which was something she didn't mind doing. It was, in all honesty, pretty fun being able to walk around and feed fish all day.

Poor Nych.

"Salad for breakfast?" She asked. They had limited options, but… They were a lot better off than they were five or so years ago.

"I won't eat. I don't really feel like tasting lettuce anymore." He said, stretching and allowing the metallic pop of his joints to startle Willow.

"But yeah. We should get up. You should come with me to find Bernard so we can get our duties for the day. I really don't feel like dealing with his recent mood." They'd lost two people recently, one of which being the newest member to the group.
